This opportunity can be a one-time project or an ongoing volunteer role based on your availability and interests. Flexible scheduling is available during business hours, and projects can often be matched to your skills and comfort level.

Help us transform our Early Head Start classrooms as we prepare for a new school year following our exciting expansion! Volunteers are needed for two important phases of this classroom refresh project.

During the first shift (August 21st), volunteers will help move classroom furniture, supplies, and materials into the center of rooms to prepare for painting. During the second shift (August 28th) volunteers will help return furniture and materials to their proper places once painting is complete, creating welcoming and organized learning environments for children and teachers.

Tasks may include lifting, carrying, organizing, and working as a team to safely move classroom items. Whether you join us for one shift or both, your support will have a direct impact on our teachers and the children they serve.

HumanKind's Early Head Start supports families and provides free, full-time childcare for infants and toddlers in the Lynchburg area. This free program promotes physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development for three and older infants and toddlers. Our Early Head Start (EHS) volunteers are compassionate, dedicated individuals who give 20+ hours each year to bring joy, comfort, and enrichment to the children we serve. Whether they are feeding infants, reading stories, playing instruments, or engaging in playful activities, these volunteers support our teams by nurturing our youngest learners' social, emotional, and cognitive development. Their presence brings warmth, learning, and laughter into our classrooms—and makes a lasting impact on every child they reach.

This program requires a commitment to 20 hours a year as well as training, background checks, TB screenings, and fingerprinting all reimbursed by HumanKind. This process may take up to 40 days depending on your timeliness in responding and background check returns from the government. We walk you through each and every step!

Join us at HumanKind’s Lynchburg Early Head Start campus for a hands-on, heart-forward volunteer opportunity! Volunteers will help pack $35 to $40 worth of fresh produce in bags from the 1600 pounds of produce that we receive for Early Head Start families. This is all in effort to make nutritious food easier to access and empowering families to feel confident picking up items that will support them at home.

We’ll meet outside at 1200 Fenwick Drive from 12–1 PM to pack and 4-5pm to clean up. Snacks will be provided — just be sure to dress for the weather! Please note, due to child protection policies, volunteers will not be able to enter the building while children are there.

This opportunity does require lifting, but we can have a volunteer dedicated to be done in a chair if needed! 

This is a recurring need on the last Wednesday of every month, and we are looking for 4 volunteers each time to help make this possible, if you would like to come monthly please let us know!

Gather your team, coworkers, friends, or volunteer individually to help enhance the beauty of HumanKind’s Lynchburg campus this spring and summer! With over 160 acres across our Lynchburg campus, there are always meaningful projects that help create welcoming, safe, and beautiful spaces for the children, families, and individuals we serve.

Our Facilities Team is looking for volunteers to assist with projects such as:
• Weeding and landscaping
• Mulching and planting flowers
• Cleaning around cottages and buildings
• Painting and light maintenance projects
• Indoor cleaning and organization projects
• Seasonal campus clean-up efforts
• General beautification and improvement projects

This opportunity is flexible and can be scheduled around our Facilities Team hours, Monday–Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

• Volunteers under 18 are not permitted to use power tools
• This opportunity is not recommended for individuals with severe outdoor or environmental allergies
• Group and individual volunteers are both welcome

HumanKind is looking for individuals, families, businesses, schools, churches, and community groups to help support children entering foster care through our First Night Backpack program.

When children are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, they often leave with very few belongings — sometimes carrying their items in trash bags. Our First Night Backpack program helps provide comfort, dignity, and essential items for a child’s first night in foster care by giving them a backpack or duffle bag filled with basic necessities and comfort items.

We currently have plenty of backpacks and duffle bags, but we need help collecting items to fill them, including:
• Pajamas (all sizes)
• New socks
• Shampoo & conditioner
• Age-appropriate books

Groups and volunteers can host donation drives and then come on-site to help assemble First Night Backpacks for children entering care. This is a meaningful hands-on opportunity that directly supports children during one of the most difficult moments in their lives.

Looking for a flexible volunteer opportunity that works around your schedule? HumanKind is seeking creative volunteers who can give just a few hours a week or every other week to support our marketing and community outreach efforts!

Volunteer projects may include:
• Taking photos or videos of programs and events
• Creating social media reels and content
• Designing graphics and promotional materials
• Helping prepare for community & fundraising events
• Supporting storytelling and awareness campaigns

Whether you love photography, social media, design, video editing, or simply want to help share HumanKind’s mission, we can match opportunities to your skills and interests. Flexible scheduling available and this can be helpful in Lynchburg and Richmond, VA as well as some virtual options!

Help support HumanKind's Ways to Work program by assisting with file organization and records management. Volunteers will pull files, sort and prepare documents for retention or shredding, and help ensure confidential records are handled appropriately. This behind-the-scenes opportunity plays an important role in keeping our program organized and efficient.
